Not enough Sleep Could Lead to Diabetes mellitus If your busy lifestyle causes you to lose sleep, you might be setting yourself up for diabetes. But don't laze in bed all day to compensate, because oversleeping might actually lead to the same result! This is the somewhat unusual outcome of a new study that suggests having too much or too little sleep could cause the blood glucose affliction, at least for those in their senior years. "This is one additional piece of information bolstering the common recommendation for sleeping seven to eight hours a night," stated study author Dr. Daniel Gottlieb, an associate professor of medicine at Boston University. Dr.Gottlieb and his researchers examined detailed statistics covering the health of over 1486 participants in an older study that analyzed the cardiovascular effects of disorders of sleep that also resulted in breathing problems. the study group were in their 50's or older. The target of the medical researchers was to see if they could locate a link between sleeping disorders and impaired ability to metabolize sugar, a early sign of of diabetes. They published their study in the respected medical journal, the 'Archives of Internal Medicine'. Compared with the people who had approximately 8 hours sleep, the participants who enjoyed lower than 5 hours sleep were between 2 and 3 times more likely to experience diabetes. The probability of diabetes was a little down for those who had 6 hours sleep. The diabetes frequency was also elevated for the subjects who slept for 9 hours or more. |
